Frankie's Fund Stem Cell Therapy for Cats with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Who Qualifies?

Cats with a biopsy-confirmed diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). If an adult cat has chronic (>2 weeks) diarrhea, but has not yet had a biopsy, the study will help pay for that diagnostic work-up based on the likelihood the cat has IBD.

Purpose of the Study

Previously, we performed a small pilot study using adipose (fat) derived stem cells (from a healthy donor cat) as a treatment for cats with chronic diarrhea. The results were very encouraging. This is the next step in determining if stem-cell treatment would benefit the most common cause of diarrhea in adult cats, IBD. Cat will be randomly assigned to receive either stem-cell treatment, or the traditional prednisolone therapy, after completing a 2-week diet trial. Owners will be "blinded” to group assignment for their cat.

What is Required?

  •  An appointment with Small Animal Medicine. Please let us know either "IBD Cat" or "Chronic Diarrhea Cat"
  •  Endoscopy with a biopsy, if not already performed, and fecal samples
  •  Various standard blood tests to assess health and other parameters
  •  Complete a short questionnaire, several times
  •  Two stem-cell (or placebo) treatments (1-2 hours), and follow-up appointments at 2 and 6 months

  • Significantly discounted endoscopy procedure
  • All other costs associated with the study, including the stem cell treatment (~$5,000) are covered
