About the Virology Section

Our virology section analyzes biological specimens to identify the presence of viruses or serologic evidence of exposure to viral agents.

We offer diagnostic testing for the major viruses of cattle, horses, pigs, dogs, cats, and selected testing for viruses of sheep, goats, wildlife, and llamas.

Our specialties include:

  • Bovine herpesvirus and bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 & 2
  • Bovine respiratory virus serology
  • Equine respiratory virus serology
  • Feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus and feline panleukopenia virus vaccine titers
  • Canine distemper virus and canine parvovirus vaccine titers
  • Rabies testing

Our testing may include:

  • Isolation of the virus (VI)
  • Detection of viruses using fluorescent antibody (FA)
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
  • Detection of antibodies by serum neutralization, hemagglutination inhibition
  • Detection of antibodies by agar gel immunodiffusion

Specimens from live animals may include:

  • Nasal or ocular secretions
  • Feces
  • Blood or tissue from a suspected viral lesion
  • Serum

We are able to test for important zoonotic diseases such as rabies and West Nile virus, as well as economically damaging viral agents such as bovine viral diarrhea virus.
