Today’s web environment is all about interesting, current content. The web community expects to find what they are looking for quickly and find it easy to access and use. On average, web users read 28 percent of all the words on a well-designed and well written web page. The combined websites of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences have well over 50,000 pages. The web team strives to make all the great work done within the College readily accessible and easy to use to those who may be searching for it on the web. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is the web content management system that will help the College websites stay current and useful.
CVMBS SharePoint 2010

What is CVMBS doing with SharePoint 2010?

SharePoint 2010 provides the College a spectrum of solutions for both public-facing web content build and management, and internal College information storage, search and retrieval, collaboration, and analysis.

Phase 1 of the College’s implementation of SharePoint will provide Web Content Management for the three primary public-facing CVMBS websites. A web content management system (WCMS) is a software system that provides website authoring, collaboration, and administration tools designed to allow users with little knowledge of web programming languages or markup languages to create and manage website content with relative ease. A robust WCMS provides the foundation for collaboration, offering users the ability to manage documents and output for multiple author editing and participation.

CVMBS SharePoint Implementation Update

In February 2012 the consulting contract was awarded to complete Phase 1 of the CVMBS SharePoint web content management system implementation. When complete, the new Veterinary Teaching Hospital website, the new portions of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences website, and an entirely new Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory website will all be built in a SharePoint 2010  environment and
all content associated with these websites will be managed within SharePoint 2010. In addition, a few new features, such as an online newsletter template for use by any unit within CVMBS and a new eCommerce solution, will be implemented. Migration of the approximately 700 pages we have built in the new templates has begun. The team plans on launching the new sites in January 2013.
