Bacteriology

Non-mycobacterial bacteriology research in MIP is diverse and is directed towards drug resistant pathogens (e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Burkholderia species) and emerging pathogens or bacteria of biodefense importance (e.g. Burkholderia pseudomallei, Francisella tularensis, and Yersinia pestis).​

Immunology

​The immune response to infection is critical to fighting diseases.   Immunologists in MIP are interested in generating protective vaccines against some of the ancient scourges of mankind including Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Leishmania and Malaria.

​The Mycobacteria Research Laboratories (MRL) participate in a wide variety of independent and collaborative research programs on various aspects of mycobacterial diseases, including tuberculosis, leprosy, the Buruli ulcer, Johne's disease, and other infections caused by Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria.

Prion Biology

Prion Biology

The department leverages its unique facilities, renowned expertise and location at ground zero of the Chronic Wasting Disease outbreak to pioneer prion research.  MIP researchers Drs. Ed Hoover, Terry Spraker, Mark Zabel, Glenn Telling and Richard Bessen collaborate with other researchers from CSU, the US and Europe to explore many aspects of the unusual and enigmatic prion diseases.​

Vector Borne Infectious Disease

The emergence and rapid dissemination of arboviruses and their vectors throughout the world, with potentially devastating consequences, is a reality. In the last decade there have been explosive global epidemics caused by dengue, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, Rift Valley fever, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever, West Nile, and chikungunya viruses. ​

The department is recognized nationally and internationally for its outstanding virology research programs. An interactive group of researchers study viruses that infect domestic and wild animals, humans, and viruses vectored by mosquitoes.​
