The Master of Science degree with a specialization in Industrial Hygiene is accredited by the Applied Sciences Accreditation Commission of ABET. Curriculum is designed to prepare individuals both technically and philosophically to practice the science and art of Industrial Hygiene. Full accreditation of the M.S. program by ABET - Applied Science Accreditation Commission was received in 1995. The Industrial Hygiene program strives to maintain a balance between its historical emphasis on a small number of individually trained students and the required breadth of the interdisciplinary training implicit in the profession.

Educational Objectives

Three to five years after graduation from the Industrial Hygiene program, alumni are expected to:

  • Apply the knowledge and skills learned from the Industrial Hygiene program to be proficient in the practice of occupational and/or environmental health.
  • Take a leadership role in business, industry, and/or government.
  • Continue professional development and life-long learning.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work well in both individual and team environments.
  • Obtain professional certification/licensure.

Student Outcomes

What students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation:

  • Apply knowledge of physics, statistics, epidemiology, chemistry, environmental and occupational health.
  • Formulate a hypothesis, design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
  • Formulate and implement a system, process, or program to meet environmental and occupational health needs.
  • Function independently and on multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Identify and solve environmental and occupational health problems.
    • Understand their professional and ethical responsibility.
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Achieve the broad education necessary to understand the impact of solutions in a global and societal context.
    • Recognize the need to engage in life-long learning.
    • Continually update their knowledge of contemporary issues.
    • Use the techniques, skills, and modern scientific and technical tools necessary for professional service.
