Feature Donor Testimonial

The Sophie Relationship-Centered Care Award is supported by Dr. Sam and Mrs. Mary Romano (DVM Class of 1983).  The award is named in memory of Sophie, a smart, tenacious and dignified wire-haired Fox Terrier, who was cared for by Dr. Rebecca Ruch-Gallie and veterinary student at the time, Dr. Olivia Love (DVM Class of 2016) at the CSU Community Practice Service. This recognition is awarded at the hooding ceremony to senior students, who demonstrate excellent communication skills, build strong relationships with clients and colleagues, and display respect for the human-animal bond. Due to the long list of qualified nominees, four veterinary students receive this award annually, reflecting student dedication to providing compassionate client and patient care.

Our dog Sophie was a cherished family member.  Witnessing her slow decline from a progressive neurologic disease in her back legs was difficult.  The students and staff on the Community Practice Service helped us navigate Sophie’s care by carefully listening to our concerns.  End of life discussions are never easy, but their compassionate communication and care helped us feel at peace with our final decision.

Although Sophie is dearly missed, her memory lives on in the hearts and minds of the students and veterinarians touched by Dr. Shaw’s work. The communication curriculum, provides students with the tools necessary to become healthy veterinarians and productive members of the community.  We observed this during Sophie’s time at the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and is the reason why we are honored to support this work with the Sophie Award.
