A veterinary student and client work together on veterinary communication

Welcome to Veterinary Communication for Professional Excellence.

Vision, Mission, and Philosophy

Vision

We envision all veterinary professionals providing effective communication for exceptional medicine and compassionate care.

Mission

To achieve positive outcomes for people and animals, we:

  • Advance best practices in veterinary communication for veterinary students and practicing professionals.

  • Promote strong partnerships with clients and patients and between veterinary professionals.

  • Graduate career-ready veterinarians and provide continuing education opportunities.

Philosophy

  • Learning through practice.

  • Promoting communication as a core clinical skill.

  • Identifying the best practices in communication needs.

  • Using these findings to inform teaching.

History

What began as the Argus Institute in 1984 is today two separate programs that complement each other and serve different needs at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Argus Institute Counseling and Support Services keeps the original program’s name. Veterinary Communication for Professional Excellence (formerly known as Argus Institute/Veterinary Communication) takes on a new name to reflect its mission. What stays the same is our combined passion for the relationships between people, their animals, and their veterinarians.
